education
Calcutta Rescue has two schools, running education programmes for over 500 pupils educated in-house and older students whose mainstream education is funded by CR in various government and private schools. We are also co-operating with municipal government and other NGOs to provide education to underpriveliged children under the City Level Programme of Action.
In addition to education, we also provide our pupils:
- Medical Diagnosis & Treatment: Free medical and disease treatment, wound dressing, emergency care and hospital referral where necessary.
- Preventive Medicine: health education, de-worming and 6 monthly screenings to check general health and development, as well as a comprehensive immunisation programme (OPV, DPT, BCG & Measles).
- Dentistry: We have our own small dentristry at Number One School, following the generous donation of a dental chair and equipment. As part of our dental hygiene programme, all children at our schools now brush their teeth daily, and are given a regular dental inspection.
- Food: All children receive two nutritionally balanced school meals, freshly prepared at school by our kitchen staff, plus a snack (usually fresh fruit) every day.
- Clothing: Our students are provided with free clothing made by our Handicrafts Workshop from cloth that is spun and woven in our Weaving Projects. School uniforms, shoes, school supplies, school bags, stationery, books. dry food, soap, washing powder, and toothpaste are also supplied.
- Counselling: A counsellor visits regularly to address student's emotional problems and issues.
- Community Outreach: Our outreach workers and teachers visit slum areas monthly to talk to parents about the importance of their children attending school, and to stress vital aspects of the health education delivered to their offspring.
- Vocational Training: Following discussion with the student, their parents, social worker and teachers, we organise appropriate vocational training for when students leave school, such as driving school instruction, beauticians training, or training at our handicrafts and weaving projects.
