pupils
Many of CR's female pupils them live in the slum or busti areas where they are chronically at risk of abuse or sexual violence, often at the hands of their own families. Many of their parents are alcoholics, and are prone to violence, stealing their bus fares or selling the extra provisions (mosquito nets, umbrellas, copy books etc) CR schools provide them.
Furthermore, Bengali culture is very conservative, preferring male children to study and not females, who by the age of 15 are expected to marry, work at home and help with bringing up their siblings or children. Consequently, a boarding school is often the only safe environment that Bengali women have in which to study through higher education.
Thus CR has a long list of female pupils at risk of abuse who we would like to find permanent boarding accommodation for so they are able to continue their studies into higher education, and beyond. Boarding accommodation and schooling costs about Rs 24,000 (€ 370) per pupil per year, and we have 80 students on our list, so we are seeking a sponsor to provide the Rs 2,000,000 (€ 30,000) annual cost of putting these girls in a safe boarding environment.
