Around 14 districts in West Bengal suffer from high levels of arsenic in the ground water....
Calcutta Rescue recognizes Education as a key to improve the future and the socio – economic conditions of the poorer sections of the society. Most children living in the slums and on the streets of Kolkata are not very keen to go to school. When they do, they often lack access to the necessary conditions – both material and social – because of which they cannot successfully carry on with their studies. These children have little hope of escaping the poverty trap.
The schools of Calcutta Rescue attempt, to help these underprivileged children, by providing educational facilities to them. Calcutta Rescue operates two non formal schools – School Number 1 and Talapark School, providing preliminary education for children aged between 4 to 6 years of age. The schools follow the guidelines of the Montessori method and cover Hindi, Bengali, English, Mathematics and general knowledge. The classes are divided into two levels of ability – Upper & Lower Kindergarten and in two mediums of instruction- Bengali and Hindi. Those children, who are good at their studies are sent to formal schools and are completely supported by Calcutta Rescue throughout their academics. The children remain linked to Calcutta Rescue and our teachers continue to monitor their progress. They return to our schools or coaching centres to do their homework, have extra tuition, computer lessons, English conversation classes and extracurricular activities like dance, music, art and drama.
Our programmes aim to support children throughout their studies, by giving them an appropriate environment for learning.
We provide all the students with:
- Text books, note books, school bags, shoes
- Extra tuition and computer classes
- Six monthly health screening and preventive & curative medical services,
- Two nutritious meals a day,
- School uniforms and clothing
- Transportation support.
- Counseling if needed
Calcutta Rescue supports the education of over 600 underprivileged students in different mainstream (formal) schools. The children of the schools are taken from the slums and areas within a radius of 3 – 5 Km.
