The location of Calcutta Rescue’s clinic in central Kolkata’s suburb of Sealdah is an unusual one – it is housed in the parking area of the Loreto Day School compound! When our previous Clinic at Cossipore closed, Sister Cyril, the Principal of Loreto Day School in Sealdah, came to our rescue and has allowed us to operate in her backyard, free of charge, since 1995. This location is extremely convenient for our patients from further afield as it is but a few minutes walk from the bustling Sealdah train station and on the very busy but well public transport serviced A J C Bose Road. The Sealdah Clinic provides treatment to approximately 40 patients per day, 6 days per week, and services include:
- Specialised care for a number of conditions, primarily heart diseases (including congenital valvular problems, hypertension and ischemic heart disease), cancer, neurological and urological conditions. Patients are also treated for diabetes and diabetic related illness, thalassaemia, and respiratory and endocrine conditions.
- An immunisation programme is run twice a week (currently Wednesdays and Thursdays) that targets street children as well as our paediatric patients from Tala Park Clinic. In addition to the immunisation itself, the programme raises awareness about the risks of communicable disease so prevalent in this vulnerable population.
- Daily health education sessions - the valuable information they receive may be about diabetes management, cardiac health, nutrition, communicable disease control, etc., all given according to the patients’ need.
- The supply of crutches and wheelchairs.
- A specialist Diabetes Management Information session is currently being run once a week, with the aim of further educating those suffering from diabetes on how to better manage their illness.
- The Disability Clinic operates once a week (currently Friday) from the Sealdah Clinic and is responsible for the needs of around 22 patients.
- A team of doctors and staff liaises with hospitals for those patients requiring in-patient care - heart surgery, dialysis, etc.
- Nutritional benefits and transport allowances are distributed to patients according to their income, medical condition and nutritional needs.
