Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), so brilliantly depicted in Dominique Lapierre’s best-seller City of Joy, buzzes with enormous energy and activity. This former Indian capital and headquarters of the East India Company has enjoyed great wealth and power for decades but, more latterly, the influx of refugees from the rural areas and Bangladesh has stretched the infrastructure to breaking point. Kolkata now has over 16 million inhabitants, of whom over 4 million live below the poverty line of $US 1.25 per day. Of these, some 2.5 million live on the streets and in the slums.
Calcutta Rescue is helping as many of these vulnerable people as resources allow.
The need is great, for example:
The work of Calcutta Rescue over the past 30 years shows that it is possible to provide hope for these marginalized people through its wide-ranging services. None of this work would be possible without the generous support of individuals around the world.
These are the people Calcutta Rescue supports with life-enhancing holistic medical care, nutrition, education and employment.
With dignity and respect. Giving health and hope.
